Language Center

Welcome to the World of Languages

Discover, learn and experience new languages and cultures at Leuphana University's Language Center. In all of the university’s programs of study, we promote and practice multilingualism, intercultural competence, and student mobility - all key goals of the European Union’s language and cultural policy. The high quality of teaching in the Language Center is the result of action research, drawing both on our instructors’ experiences in the classroom and their academic research.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner, in the Language Center you can improve your language skills in the classroom and in projects. To help you further your own personal and academic development, we offer language classes with an intercultural focus, international tandem programs, language and learning counseling as well as interdisciplinary exchange programs.

The Language Center offers classes in general language acquisition (BASE) with a broad spectrum of languages and levels (mainly at the A1–A2 level, but also up to the high C1 level), in the Leuphana Semester, and in the Complementary Studies program (starting at the B2 upper-intermediate level) where the Language Center coordinates the specialization profile in North American Studies (NAS). In the Complementary Studies, our action and problem-oriented learning approach will help you improve your language competencies while giving you an opportunity to learn and reflect on a variety of interdisciplinary and cultural topics. The German as a Foreign Language program offers, in addition to its regular courses during the semester, intensive courses at different levels in March and September. International students have the opportunity to take the official DSH German Language Certificate in the Language Center.

In our Self-Access Center, the Selbstlernzentrum or SLZ, you have the opportunity to take placement tests for a number of different languages, deepen your knowledge of a language you are studying in class, or learn a language not currently taught at Leuphana University.
